Music Video

This project was for my history of animation class at SCAD. The ask was to create a tribute to any artist or studio that has inspired us. I chose Oskar Fischinger, who was an early abstract motion graphics artist in the 1930s. This tribute was inspired by his film "An Optical Poem" from 1937. I utilized the same synchronous art style, but matched it to a modern song that I enjoy; Wishes by Beach House. This project was created in Adobe After Effects.

Inspiration

This is a series of screen grabs from Oskar Fischinger's "An Optical Poem." I was inspired by the color scheme and use of circles and geometric forms. Several of my animations imitate his. Ultimately, the biggest element I chose to replicate was his goal of synchronizing images to music. I even added overlays of film grain and glow to get a similar appearance.

Lyrics

The roses on the lawn
Don't know which side you're on
In a daze, it will change

Wishes on a wheel
Wishes on a wheel

The voices in the hall
Will carry on their talking
Carry weight you can't take

Wishes on a wheel
Is it even real?

The contact that you make
The moment when a memory aches
Who can tell?
You do it well

Wishes on a wheel
How's it supposed to feel?

One in your life
It happens once and rarely twice
One in your life
It happens once and rarely twice

The roses on the lawn
Won't know which side you're on
On that hill, forever still

Wishes on a wheel
How's it supposed to feel?

Wishes on a wheel
